Peter Dooley
Elected

School Name: Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka

School Profile Number: 3379

My name is Peter Dooley and I’m standing for the Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka Board. I have two daughters attending Hoon Hay- Paige is in Koroī 4 and Olive in Kūkupa 4.

The reason I am standing for the position is that I have a genuine interest in the work of the school and the education and welfare of all our students. My governance experience and time at the school makes me a good candidate for a vacant Board position.

I have sound governance experience as a member of the Medical Radiation Technologists Board since 2017 and I am also on the Christchurch South Karamata Intermediate School Board since last year.

I have spent ten years managing the MRI team at Christchurch Hospital and specialised in helping anxious children having medical procedures using virtual reality. During my time in this role, I realised important values in my work are service and community.

During my whānau’s time at Hoon Hay Te Kura Koaka I have been able to regularly volunteer for roles such as parent help on camps, field trips, Netball coaching and recently with the production and believe I have a good feel for the school’s values and community’s needs.

I am passionate, have the courage to ask difficult questions and will bring a pragmatic approach. I can draw on my knowledge, experience and relationships to consider issues from a range of perspectives, build consensus among different stakeholders and help find solutions to complex problems.

I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the success of Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka as part of the Board.

Amy van Deurs
Elected

My name is Amy van Deurs and I am standing for the Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka School Board. I live in Hoon Hay and have two children at the school, Charlotte (year 4) and James (year 1). We are an active, outdoorsy family who also enjoy the arts.

I believe in the power of education and am a proponent for quality teaching in learning spaces that are happy, inclusive and safe. I consider I have the skills and experience to be a valuable board member and, if elected, will work hard to ensure that Hoon Hay School continues to be a place where all children can thrive, underpinned by staff who are valued.

I have been actively involved in the Hoon Hay school community over the past 4.5 years; helping with fundraising, assisting with excursions, side line cheering, and on occasion, busting out my ninja turtle costume and sliding through mud to give the children an extra giggle.

I am currently on a career break. Prior to this I was a family lawyer for over a decade. I practiced as a solicitor in firms and a barrister in chambers. I have worked in judicial education, written for legal texts, presented at law conferences and mentored juniors. Alongside, I have held volunteer and board roles; including secretary of UC Athletics Club, board member of Perinatal Wellbeing Canterbury, volunteer lawyer at Community Law Canterbury, and member of the Canterbury/Westland Legal Culture Committee where I instigated a targeted mental health and wellbeing programme that has since been rolled out nationwide. I enjoy thinking outside the box and am not afraid to challenge status quo. My advocacy has been described as “considered, thoughtful and, at times, fearless.”

Last - but not least - I bring to the table lived experience of mental ill health and neurodiversity. Both are areas that I am passionate about and on which I continue to educate myself.

Thank you for reading my candidate statement and to all those who vote for me. I would be honoured to be elected to the board.
